Man City player Jack Grealish responds to Gareth Southgate comments

Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish agrees with England boss Gareth Southgate that he needs to improve his positional responsibilities.

The Three Lions boss praised the 26-year-old for his performance on the flank in the 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany last week. As a result, he was handed a start for Saturday’s goalless draw with Italy.

But ahead of the game, Southgate identified an area that Grealish can improve upon when representing his country.

He said: "At the start of the game the challenge for the wide players was to attack, defend and to try and score goals - high tactical level and you've got to be spot on - and that's an area Jack can get better at.”

Responding to these comments during an interview with broadcasters Channel 4, Grealish said he agreed with his manager. “He is probably right, he is the England manager and I have got to listen to him,” he said.

“I know that there is certain stuff that I can improve on, it’s the manager and that is who I have to try and impress. That is something that I will try and work on.”

Asked whether Southgate had detailed his expectations, he replied: “He hasn’t actually said anything to me personally, obviously we have had team meetings and stuff and I know what I have to do tonight (against Italy).”

Grealish, who became a household name at Euro 2020, lifted his first Premier League title with City last month. He was often played on the left by Pep Guardiola throughout the campaign, in an alternative position to the attacking midfield role he occupied at Aston Villa.
