Man City penalty takers to be put on the spot as Pep Guardiola claims Ederson 'could do it'

Pep Guardiola will conduct a review of Manchester City’s penalty takers after watching his side miss from the spot for the third time this season.

The Catalan fears City’s wastefulness could wreck their chances of finally winning the Champions League this season – and says he already has an idea who will be handed the role, mischievously adding that Ederson is the most clinical from 12 yards at the club.

Gabriel Jesus saw his 36th-minute penalty saved by Dean Henderson in Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Sheffield United.

The Brazil international has now missed three of his last five spot kicks in the Premier League.

Guardiola has previously allowed the players to decide who will take penalties during the game – but says he will have to make changes for the sake of City’s hopes of winning silverware this season.

“I have to reflect on it,” he said. “I always give confidence to the players to take it, but maybe I have to take the decision which guy is going to take it.

"Not because of Gabriel today, because Sergio (Aguero) and Raheem (Sterling) have missed too. But we are not safe.

“In this knockout stage (of the season), it’s so important these kind of details make the difference most of the time.

“We have to reflect on it. I have to make the decision the guy who will take the penalty.”

Guardiola says he already has an idea who will become City’s permanent penalty-taker – but says no one is more deadly than his goalkeeper.

“Ederson is the best,” he added. “Believe me, he’s the best taker we have in penalties. Eddie has no blood in his veins. He’s so calm, so he could do it.”
