Man City open to Pablo Zabaleta return after club legend confirms retirement

Manchester City are open to welcoming Pablo Zabaleta back to the Etihad after the club legend confirmed his retirement.

Zabaleta made over 300 appearances for the Blues in his nine years in Manchester and was an integral part of the Premier League title-winning sides under Roberto Mancini in 2012 and Manuel Pellegrini in 2014. He stands alongside Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, Joe Hart, David Silva and Sergio Aguero as one of the best and most popular players in recent history and was a firm fan favourite throughout his time.

After three years in East London with West Ham, Zabaleta left in summer and last week announced his retirement from professional football.

"After 18 years as a professional footballer, I took the decision to retire from playing football. These have been wonderful years that gave me the opportunity to enjoy unique and unforgettable moments," he wrote.

"Forever i will thank all the people that shared the journey with me; clubs, teammates, coaches and in particular my family and all my friends. With a lot of emotions I leave behind one of the best stages of my life.

"Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!"

Zabaleta started his coaching badges a few years ago with an eye on life after his playing days, and City would be open to offering the Argentine defender back to the club if the right opportunity arose. A number of former Blues have returned to the Etihad in various roles since retiring, including Patrick Vieira and Joleon Lescott.
