Man City morning headlines as Martinez linked and Barcelona in for Angelino

Here are your Manchester City morning headlines for Sunday, 23 August.

Inter striker could be Aguero’s long-term replacement

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly looking to reinforce his attacking options this summer, with Inter striker Lautaro Martinez said to be his top target.

At 32, Sergio Aguero has just 12 months remaining on his contract and, according to The Sun, Guardiola is keen to bring in Martinez as his long-term replacement.

It is claimed that City are ready to meet his £81million release clause ahead of Barcelona, who are also keeping tabs on the Argentine.

Martinez has had a brilliant season in Italy, scoring 20 goals, although he was unable to prevent his side losing the Europa League final to Sevilla on Friday night.

Mahrez’s best City campaign yet

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has become a more important player for the club after an excellent 2019/2020 season.

MEN Sport has looked at the wideman’s stats for last term, where he amassed significantly more league minutes for the Blues - 2112 minutes compared with 1430 minutes the previous season.

Mahrez also upped his overall output in the final third to 11 goals and nine assists, and turned in several standout displays.

There is also evidence to suggest that he was able to adjust his own game to meet the requirements of what was needed from a tactical point of view.

Angelino emerges as Barca target

Barcelona have joined RB Leipzig in the race to sign City left-back Angelino.

The Spaniard has caught Barca’s attention after his part in RB Leipzig’s run to the Champions League semi-final.

City, however, are holding out for €30million (£27m) for the 23-year-old, who returned to the Etihad on a permanent deal last season when the Blues exercised their £5.3m buyback clause.

But Angelino was unable to hold down a regular first-team place and joined Leipzig on loan in January.
