Man City morning headlines as Man Utd star makes Lionel Messi claim with saga reaching crucial point

Here are the Manchester City morning headlines for Wednesday, September 2.

Mason Greenwood would love the chance to play against Messi

Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood would relish the opportunity to come up against Lionel Messi in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s men are considered the frontrunners for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner’s signature after he handed in a transfer request at Barcelona.

Greenwood, who has speaking to the media while on England duty, would love the chance to test himself against the Argentinian superstar.

"It would be amazing to even come up against him," the United academy graduate said.

"All young footballers know about Messi as everyone knows so to be on the same pitch, playing against him would be another dream come true, not just for me but for everyone really.

"For someone that high profile to come to the Premier League, it's a really big thing."

Messi transfer saga reaches crucial point

The next few days could be key in City’s pursuit of Messi.

The 33-year-old has failed to show up to pre-season training this week as he doubles down on his intention to leave Barcelona, having spent over two decades on their books.

There has been little that City have been able to do in recent days as his contract dispute with the Catalan club rages on behind the scenes.

But a resolution will need to be found for all parties as the new season approaches.

Here’s everything we know from M.E.N Sport’s Simon Bajkowski.

Walker addresses ‘bad decisions’ made during lockdown

Kyle Walker is grateful for the opportunity to represent England once again, having been recalled to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

He hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since June 2019, with Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold getting opportunities in his place.

Walker was subject to tabloid scrutiny earlier in the year, having reportedly hosted a party and visited his family at different addresses during the lockdown restrictions.

But he put in a number of good performances for City as the season resumed in June.

“I reflect on my decision making,” said the 30-year-old (via Metro).

“It was bad decisions from me at an important time for the country and the world. I take full responsibility for that but I’m moving on now.

“I think I came back from the lockdown with Manchester City and hit the ground running, played some really good football. Hopefully I can continue that in an England shirt.”
