Man City morning headlines as Guardiola signing story highlights Lillo bond

Good morning, Manchester City fans. Here are your morning headlines for Monday, June 15.

New City assistant stopped Guardiola signing

New Manchester City assistant coach Juanma Lillo was the reason Pep Guardiola turned down a move to the club in 2005.

As explained by Stuart Brennan, Stuart Pearce was keen to sign the former Barcelona midfielder after an impressive trial, only for Lillo to intervene at the last minute.

Lillo, who was in charge of Mexican side Dorados De Sinaloa at the time, offered Guardiola a contract.

The lure of playing under Lillo, one of his coaching heroes, proved too strong for Guardiola, who snubbed City and moved to Mexico before hanging up his boots six months later.

Lillo, 54, has joined City after a spell with Qingdao Huanghai in China. He has also coached in Spain, Chile, Colombia and Japan during his career.

Silva eyeing Qatar move

Manchester City captain David Silva will move to Qatar club Al-Duhail at the end of the season, according to reports.

As per Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, the Middle Eastern outfit will edge out AC Milan and David Beckham’s Inter Miami for the 34-year-old’s signature.

Silva is on record as saying he wants to leave City this summer after a 10-year association that has yielded four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.

While the Spaniard’s contract was initially due to expire at the end of June, he is expected to sign a short extension to take him up to the end of the season.

Sancho 'open to City return' claim

Jadon Sancho is willing to return to Manchester City despite an acrimonious departure three years ago, according to the Sun.

Sancho left City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017 after Guardiola refused to assure the winger of first-team football.

However, the 20-year-old would be willing to ‘bury the hatchet’ and snub Manchester United in favour of returning to the Etihad.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also tracking the England international, who Dortmund value at around £115million.

Sancho has enjoyed an excellent season in the Bundesliga, with 17 goals and 16 assists in 29 appearances.
