Man City morning headlines as fans make transfer demand and Upamecano linked again

Here are your Manchester City morning headlines for Friday, 9 October.

City fans want a new striker

City fans have singled out attack as the area of the pitch Pep Guardiola needs to improve in when the transfer window reopens.

Defence was clearly the priority this summer, with Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake brought in from Benfica and Bournemouth respectively.

City also signed winger Ferran Torres, but chose not to bring in a new striker.

With Sergio Aguero injured, Gabriel Jesus is the only natural option to lead the line, so it’s understandable that fans want a new addition in that position.

The MEN asked supporters: “Following City's transfer business this past summer, what position do the club need to strengthen the most in January?”

Perhaps surprisingly, 56.7% of the 1,146 votes were for 'attack’, while defence garnered only 32.4%. Midfield, meanwhile, earned only 3.1% of the vote.

Upamecano could be a target next summer

City could look to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer, according to reports.

According to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness ), Guardiola’s side are one of three teams in the Premier League believed to be interested in the 21-year-old.

Upamecano has emerged as one of the most in-demand players in Europe after his performances for Leipzig in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season.

Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring his availability. MEN Sport understands United retain an interest in the 21-year-old who was scouted by the club as a teenager.

Wenger suggests FIFA rule change that could impact City

Arsene Wenger has proposed a potential change to the offside rule which could prove significant for City.

The former Arsenal manager, now FIFA’s Chief Head of Global Football, is looking to improve the game by tweaking some of the laws.

And any amendments to the offside rule could impact City, given the high defensive line Guardiola’s team operate with.

“For the moment, you are offside if a part of your body that you can score with sits ahead of the body of a defender,” Wenger told L’Equipe.

“I would like it to be that there is no offside so long as a (single) body part which a player can score with is in line with the defender.

“This could be too much of an advantage for an attacker because that obliges the defenders to play higher up.”
