Man City morning headlines as club hits back over new Der Spiegel claims

Club statement released on new email allegations

German media outlet Der Spiegel claims to have evidence suggesting Manchester City lied to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) during the appeal over their two-year ban from Uefa competitions.

However, the German outlet’s latest claims have been dismissed and rejected by City with a statement of their own.

“The questions and matters raised by Der Spiegel appear to be a cynical attempt to publicly re-litigate and undermine a case that has been fully adjudicated, after detailed proceedings and due process, by the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” it read.

“Manchester City’s policy remains not to comment on out of context materials purported to have been criminally obtained from City Football Group and Manchester City personnel.”

On July 13, CAS announced that City had been cleared of any wrongdoing and can compete in European competition next season.

City and United battle for Spanish defender?

The MEN understands Pau Torres is on a five-man transfer shortlist put together by City but 90min.com report that rivals United are also keen.

City are closing in on the signings of two of the players on that list, with Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres closing in on moves to City.

The other players are Pau Torres, Kalidou Koulibaly and Ruben Dias.

Fans hit back at Carragher’s Ake claim

City are expected to complete the signing of Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake for up to £41million.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher expressed his uncertainty over the move, saying the Dutch defender would “suit Man City” but he wasn’t “convinced two left-footed centre-backs works” as a pairing - the other being Aymeric Laporte, of course.

But City fans were quick to respond to Carragher on Twitter , saying he had missed much of the point regarding why City want Ake.

The reasonings of cover for injuries, rotation, versatility and of course two right-footers often being used together were all highlighted, as well as some suggesting City will buy another centre-back on top of Ake anyway.

John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi could leave the Etihad this summer.
