Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan misses Germany training with injury

Ilkay Gundogan sat out Germany's training session ahead of their crunch final group game in Euro 2020.

A defeat to France in their opening fixture put them in a precarious position in one of the toughest groups in the tournament, but a 4-2 win over Portugal saw them bounce back into contention for qualification.

Joachim Low's side go into their third game against Hungary on Wednesday knowing that victory will definitely see them through to the knockout rounds - although whether they get top spot or not will depend on whether France beat Portugal.

Gundogan has started both games in the competition so far, but was one of four players to sit out Monday's training session; Mats Hummels, Thomas Muller and Lukas Klostermann also missed out.

The City player has a calf injury but no further details have been given.

His City teammates Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias also have a chance of making it out of the group but will need results to go their way when they take on France on Wednesday.

As things stand, all 15 City players who are at the tournament could make it into the knockout stages. That will keep them occupied with their national teams until the end of June at the earliest, with the final being played on July 11.

Pep Guardiola will be back in the dugout less than a month later when the Blues face Leicester on August 7 in the Community Shield to kickstart a new season of domestic football.
