Man City midfielder Fernandinho reveals how he prepared for centre-back role after Shakhtar win

Fernandinho has revealed how he's preparing for an extended spell at centre-back for Manchester City in the coming weeks.

The Brazilian , a midfield anchor by trade, is likely to be deputising at the heart of City's defence for the next month after John Stones was ruled out for four to five weeks on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola's side are down to one fit senior centre-back after Stones' knock and with Ayermic Laporte injured until February. Nicolas Otamendi remains the only man left standing.

That means Guardiola's most logical partner for the Argentine is Fernandinho, who started at the heart of the backline in their 3-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

It was an important night for City, who brushed past their hosts with minimal fuss, a much-needed result after their 3-2 defeat against Norwich City at the weekend.

It's a role that the Brazilian has performed in previously, after a small spell in that position last season.

Having signed Rodri for big money in the summer, the 34-year-old was marking his first start of the season in Ukraine, having lost his position as City's holding midfielder.

However, Fernandinho, who captained the side against their Group C counterparts, has revealed how he has been preparing in that position ahead of what is likely to be an extended run in the team in defence.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, the Brazilian said: "I’ve been training in this position since the beginning of the season.

"Of course, Pep knows everything about our squad, our team and when he needs you, I think every player should be ready.

"Today was my time, my opportunity and I hope I can get better and improve a little bit more."

Fernandinho and Otamendi are expected to continue their new partnership at the back again this weekend when City host Watford at the Etihad Stadium.
