Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva shows class with Phil Foden gesture after win vs Tottenham Hotspur

Bernardo Silva rejected the Premier League's man-of-the-match award after Manchester City's win over Tottenham because he felt Phil Foden was more deserving of it.

Teenager Foden, starting a top-flight game for just the second time in his career, nodded home City's winner in the fifth minute after good work from Bernardo and Sergio Aguero.

Bernardo was voted man of the match by Sky Sports but he was in no mood to accept it as he generously handed the award over to Foden.

“I’d like to hand it over to Phil because I honestly feel he deserves it," Bernardo said. "He’s so young and he’s a fantastic player. This one’s for you, you scored the winner.”

The Portuguese playmaker praised City's fans for the support they showed just three days on from the Blues' heartbreaking Champions League exit.

“That game three days ago against Tottenham, we wanted to give a response especially here with our fans," Bernardo added.

"We wanted to keep the race for the Premier League title alive, that’s what we did today. It was a great game for us, very difficult because we didn’t have a lot of time to rest. It was really warm outside, as you can imagine, and it’s a great win, three points.

"Now onto the next one against Manchester United, a very tough game. If I’m not mistaken there’s four more [matches] to go and we need four wins."

Bernardo did admit he could sense some nervousness from the stands after Wednesday night's disappointment.

"Maybe [there was] a little bit [of nervousness]," he added. "We weren't nervous but of course there was some pressure because we are fighting for the Premier League.

"You always have pressure in these kind of games, but we felt the atmosphere, we felt the support, they were amazing once again today like they were three days ago and we have to thank them.

"Without them it's impossible to fight for these kind of titles and to win these kind of games."
