Man City midfield player Phil Foden given England fitness challenge

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden will be looking to prove his fitness with the England Under-21s this summer.

The 19-year-old put in extra sessions in the gym last season in an effort to bulk up physically and felt like it paid off as he muscled his way into the first-team for important games with Cardiff, Tottenham, and Leicester in the Premier League run-in .

Foden has been selected as part of Aidy Boothroyd's Under-21 squad for the European Championships, starting next month where the Young Lions will look to make it out of a group containing France, Romania, and Croatia.

Boothroyd has set up a regime to make sure the players are in top condition heading into the tournament.

"Our training is four days on, three days off, and we train twice a day all the way through May and June until we go on the 14th," the coach told PA Sport.

"The boys are working in the gym at 6.30pm at night and they are training at 11.00am every morning, and in between they have other bits and pieces they need to do.

"It's not an army camp but it's not a holiday camp either. It's just a camp."

Foden will also have to prove his match fitness. The City youngster was described as "treading treacle" after an hour of an England Under-21 match with Poland in March, and players such as James Maddison, Mason Mount and Morgan Gibbs-White have racked up many more league minutes over the last 12 months.

However, Foden finished the season strongly with Pep Guardiola's treble-winning team and will hope to build on that momentum.
