Man City manager Pep Guardiola equals impressive Champions League record despite Tottenham exit

Despite Man City exiting the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion on away goals to Tottenham Hotspur, Pep Guardiola did equal an impressive record.

Though it's hardly remembered City did actually beat Spurs on the night in what was a thrilling game and the best for quite some time.

The game got off to a whirlwind start with City going in front, then going behind and then retaking the lead once again all within 21 minutes.

Sergio Aguero then gave City the goal they needed to advance but the game was turned on its head when Fernando Llorente scored a controversial goal late on which put Spurs ahead on away goals.

City pushed for a winner and got it in the 92nd minute when Raheem Sterling's deft touch took him past a flailing tackle and he fired the Etihad into delight.

All for VAR to cruelly intervene and correctly rule the goal out for off-side.

Spurs held on and City were knocked out in the most agonising way imaginable.

City did run out 4-3 winners on the night and it was Guardiola's 27th victory in Champions League knock-out matches.

This brought him level with the all-time record that is held jointly by former Manchester United managerial duo Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, and Carlo Ancelotti.

Considering Ferguson is retired, Mourinho is currently without a club and Ancelotti is managing Napoli, who were knocked out at the group stage this season, you would fancy Guardiola to beat the record next season and with any luck continue to set it higher as City try again for the trophy next season.
