Man City manager Pep Guardiola could be about to record his greatest ever achievement

Pep Guardiola has won it all as a manager.

Two Champions League titles, seven domestic titles in three different countries and 17 other trophies and counting, pretty remarkable given he's still on the right side of 50.

And now he finds himself in a position where if City win their last three games against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton they'll become only the third team in Premier League history to retain the title.

Given the City manager won the treble at Barcelona in his first season in charge at the La Liga club and led Bayern Munich to three successive Bundesliga titles, it may have come as a slight surprise to hear the Catalan say this would be his greatest achievement.

"To be here with 86 points after 100 last season is one of the most remarkable things I have had in my career as a football player and as a manager," Guardiola said after City's win against Spurs in the Premier League last Saturday.

Man City use key advantage at crucial point to sink Man Utd and leapfrog Liverpool FC

To retain a title is difficult, that's why it's only been done by two clubs (Manchester United and Chelsea) before and there's the added pressure of making club history at the same time.

In isolation it will be just another league title to add to Guardiola's already bulging trophy cabinet but without disrespecting the work he did at Barcelona and Bayern the task at City this season has been tougher this season than in his previous jobs.

"I don't deny how good it was in Barcelona what I did and in Bayern Munich. Honestly in this league when everyone can lose to everyone and with the physicality and playing every three days and being up against one of the best Liverpool teams ever and still being there with the problems we have had with one of the best players not involved in a lot of the season and being there every three days, that is really remarkable, that is when I appreciate my players the most," Guardiola said.

And he's right.

Man City have another undroppable player after Manchester derby win

It's one thing to win a two-horse race in Spain with arguably the best player in the world within your ranks but it's a whole other task to challenge on four fronts and be involved in a title race going to the wire in a season where one of your key players in Kevin de Bruyne has spent weeks sidelined.

Whoever finishes second will have recorded enough points to win the league in 14 different seasons since the start of the Premier League back in 1992/93.

The biggest ever points haul by the reigning Premier League title holders is 92, set by United in the 42-game season of 1993-94 and City are already on 89 with three games left to play.

And they've already broken the record for most goals scored in a single season, it's already been a record breaking season.

Guardiola insists he doesn't need his team to be crowned champions to appreciate how good they have been this season and said both Liverpool and City deserve the trophy.

But, should they manage it over the next three games it will go down as one of his greatest achievements.
