Man City manager Pep Guardiola asked about Benjamin Mendy Covid-19 breach

Pep Guardiola insists Benjamin Mendy will learn from his mistake after he was forced to apologise for breaching Covid-19 protocols on New Year's Eve.

A report in The Sun said Mendy hosted friends for New Year's celebrations in a move that was against regulations concerning the virus.

While City said they will investigate the incident they did add that it had been "misinterpreted", and Mendy is on the bench for the Blues against Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola said Mendy has tested negative for Covid-19 since New Year's Eve.

"The club made a statement. Benjamin has already had Covid in the past," Guardiola told Sky Sports.

"He's been tested every day like all of us and he's negative. He explained it was his nephew and his girlfriend, he invited a doctor who was friends of the girlfriends who were negative too.

"But he knows what he has done and he will learn in the future."

Mendy's breach comes as City are missing six players for the trip to Stamford Bridge as a result of a Covid-19 outbreak at the club. Ederson, Kyle Walker, Eric Garcia, Tommy Doyle, Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus are all out after testing positive for the virus.

On the Mendy incident, a City statement said: "The club is aware of a New Year’s Eve Covid-19 breach involving Benjamin Mendy and the subsequent media reporting of it.

"While it is understood that elements of this incident have been misinterpreted in the reports, and that the player has publicly apologised for his error.

"The club is disappointed to learn of the transgression and will be conducting an internal investigation."
