Man City manager gives verdict on English teams in Champions League

Pep Guardiola has been impressed by the results of the three other Premier League teams in the Champions League this season.

But the Manchester City boss says there is a long way to go before their achievements can match up to the success that Spanish sides enjoyed in the previous decade.

City, United, and Liverpool have already qualified as group winners with a game to spare, while Chelsea have also booked their place in the last-16 and can confirm top spot over Juventus if they match the result of the Serie A side when they take on Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday.

To have at least three and potentially four of the eight seeds for the last-16 continues the strong showing of English clubs in Europe; Chelsea and City contested the Champions League final last season, England ranks as the top nation in UEFA's country co-efficients and boasts three of the top five in the club co-efficients.

If another strong year is on the cards for Premier League sides, Guardiola knows only too well how dominant Spanish sides were previously. His first triumph in the competition in Barcelona in 2009 was the first of seven Champions League final wins earned by La Liga clubs over the next ten years, with Real Madrid winning three in a row and four in five years.

Chelsea and Liverpool successes mean England has won two of the last three tournaments, but the City manager is not ready to compare the countries yet even if he is aiming to add City's name to the list of winners.

"Spain was one decade, here was two or three years so we have to wait to compare what Barcelona, Madrid, Atletico, Valencia has done in these years," he said.

"It's a fact that the last years English teams are there in the last stages. The group stages are so difficult but look at what Liverpool, United and Chelsea have done - all four are qualified and this is a big success for the Premier League. I'm glad for that."
