Man City loans manager Joleon Lescott surprised by Racing Murcia transfer announcement

Joleon Lescott is considering a return to competitive football after a Spanish third division side announced his participation in an upcoming Copa del Rey match.

Former Manchester City defender Lescott, who currently manages young players at the club out on loan as well as doing other work including punditry, had agreed to help out Racing Murcia for what he thought was an exhibition game.

However, it transpires that the club expects him to feature in the Copa del Rey - the Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup - for their first-round tie against La Liga side Levante on December 16.

Lescott has not made a final decision on whether or not to go ahead, although it is not expected that his current role at City would change in any way whatever happens.

Pep Guardiola happier with Manchester City's attacking output after the 1-0 win over Olympiacos

The former centre-back and England international is now 38 and retired from the game in 2017, with his last professional match coming for Sunderland in a 5-1 defeat by Chelsea on the final day of the 2016/17 Premier League season.

Lescott was on punditry duty for BT Sport on Wednesday as he gave his thoughts on City's Champions League victory over Olympiacos.

Should he go ahead with the bizarre move, Lescott would be linking up with one familiar name in Spain in Mathias Pogba, the brother of Manchester United star Paul.

Racing announced the signing on Friday morning on Twitter, posting a photo of Lescott in his City days. Club president Morris Pagniello was clearly delighted with the news and tweeted himself, writing: "Let’s Go!!!!!" accompanied by several Union Jack emojis.

Earlier this month, Pagniello looked to complete an even more high-profile signing by bringing legendary striker Samuel Eto'o out of retirement.

"At this time of the morning I would say that the signing of Samuel Eto'o by our team is at 50-50," he told Radio Marca. "Next week we will know if we can sign Eto'o. If not, we have a Plan B prepared. We have several investors in Mexico and the Emirates who can financially compensate the operation."
