Man City legend Vincent Kompany shirt sells 4,000 in the first week at Anderlecht

Vincent Kompany fever has hit Anderlecht with 4,000 shirts bearing his name sold in the first week.

The former Manchester City skipper was unveiled as the Belgian club’s new player-manager on Tuesday, and that has prompted a rush at the club shop.

The iconic purple and white shirt bearing his name and the number four he wore for nine seasons at the Etihad Stadium has been a big seller.

The club only sold 8,000 replica shirts in total last season, and they feel the arrival of the Belgium international will boost that figure to between 12,000 and 15,000.

Kit supplier Joma has been asked to step up delivery of shirts with demand out-stripping supply.

Kompany ’s appointment has also given the club a boost in other areas, with subscriptions and sponsor interest up,

The 33-year-old left City last month after nearly 11 years in which he won four Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup.

His vow to play attacking, attractive football has gone down well with the supporters.

Kompany said: “I feel I can start something incredible here. People who know me know I would not start something without a plan.”
