Man City learn Carabao Cup third round opponents as defence begins

Manchester City begin their defence of the Carabao Cup against Bournemouth or Crystal Palace.

City, who have won the competition for the past three seasons, will enter the cup at the third round stage due to their participation in Europe.

The first round was played this weekend, with the second round draw taking place on Sunday afternoon. Those ties will take place on the week commencing September 14, with City facing their third round opponents a week later.

And the third round draw has paired Pep Guardiola's side with a home tie against the winner of the second round meeting between Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

It means summer signing Nathan Ake could be facing his former side early on into his City career after he left Bournemouth following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

City begin their Premier League campaign at Wolves on Monday September 21, before taking on Leicester on Sunday September 27, with the cup game now scheduled to take place between those two fixtures.

Any hopes of rescheduling the game would be slim, as the fourth round is due to take place the following week, meaning if they progress, City could face four games in as little as 13 days at the start of the season.
