Man City injury update on Sergio Aguero ahead of Champions League

Pep Guardiola is planning to face Real Madrid without Sergio Aguero but Manchester City remain hopeful that they will be able to call on the striker again this season.

Aguero suffered a problem with his meniscus in the second game back after the restart and will miss the remainder of the Premier League and FA Cup campaign after undergoing surgery in Barcelona.

Following the FA Cup final on August 1 should the Blues make it, Guardiola's side will then resume their Champions League campaign with the second leg of their last-16 clash against Real Madrid. While a venue has not yet been confirmed, it will take place six or seven days after the FA Cup final before the final three rounds are held in Lisbon between August 12 and August 23.

Asked about the absence of Aguero following the 4-0 thumping of Liverpool, City's manager indicated that the last-16 clash with Real Madrid will come too soon for the striker to return.

However, if they are able to make it past Zinedine Zidane's team there remains a hope that he will be able to play a part in the latter stages. "Unfortunately Sergio is injured so he couldn't be here," said Guardiola.

"We will wait for him. I don't know if he will be ready for the Champions League, the second leg against Madrid it is impossible. But we have to look forward.

"We are going to wait for him, and with the players that we have we are going to do it."
