Man City injury round-up and return dates ahead of Southampton fixture

Manchester City are back on the road in the Premier League as they travel down to the south coast to face Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side saw their four-match unbeaten run come grinding to a halt as they were beaten 3-1 by Wolves last time out.

Pep Guardiola's side were decimated by COVID in recent weeks and, at its peak, saw 21 first team playing staff being forced to isolate.

Despite this, their march to the top of the Premier League continued and they will be looking to take their winning run to 13 games after seeing off Chelsea last weekend.

Liverpool are their nearest challengers, albeit the points gap is in double figures, and City could extend their lead to 14 points with a win over the Saints.

On Friday, Guardiola revealed Nathan Ake would be available for selection for the St Mary's visit but Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko would be absent after suffering a knock.

Riyad Mahrez saw his nation's defence of the Africa Cup of Nations fall at the group stage after their bruising defeat to Ivory Coast sealed their fate but he won't be involved in the trip to St Mary's.

"He has holiday for a week. After African Cup, he has permission for a week off to come back next week," the Premier League-winning manager confirmed.

After impressing in the FA Cup third-round win over Swindon Town, there has been a lot of excitement surrounding Cole Palmer. The youngster was missing from training this week and remains a doubt but no absence was confirmed.

Liam Delap remains sidelined after an ankle injury but has boosted his chances of a return after featuring in first-team training in recent weeks.
