Man City include clause to buy Angelino back in RB Leipzig deal

Manchester City have included a buy-back clause should RB Leipzig trigger the permanent signing of Angelino.

The Dutch defender was brought back to the Etihad last summer from PSV Eindhoven thanks to a clause put into his 2018 sale that would allow Pep Guardiola's side to buy him for £5.3m. Angelino struggled to prove his worth in the Premier League but flourished at RB Leipzig after a January loan move that saw the team reach their first Champions League semi--final.

While the Bundesliga club turned down the option to sign him at the end of the season for around €30m, they have now agreed a season-long loan for the player that includes the automatic purchase for €18m if he makes 12 appearances for them including 5 of those in the second half of the campaign; he played 18 times under Julian Nagelsmann between February and August.

However, City have inserted another buy-back clause into that deal so they will be able to bring him back to the Etihad for a third time if they come back with €40m for him. If the conditions of triggering the permanent deal give some security for RB Leipzig, this clause does the same for the Blues. City will not, however, get a cut of a future sale if Angelino moves elsewhere with no sell-on clause negotiated.

With Angelino gone, Guardiola is set to start the season with Benjamin Mendy, Joao Cancelo and Aleks Zinchenko as his options at left-back. Cancelo was signed to challenge Kyle Walker at right-back but proved promising on the other flank in the final weeks of the season.
