Man City 'identify Benfica starlet as Fernandinho replacement'

Manchester City have identified the Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis as a potential candidate to succeed Fernandinho in the heart of the Blues' midfield, according to reports.

City were unsuccessful in their attempts to recruit a defensive midfielder last summer, with Jorginho and Fred opting for moves to Chelsea and Manchester United respectively, while Ajax's Frenkie De Jong will turn out for Barcelona next season after overlooking a move to the Etihad.

Luis, 19, is reported by the Guardian to have a €60 million (£51m) release clause in his contract and City are said to have been keeping a watchful eye on his development.

Fernandinho, 33, has made 41 appearances for City this season but has been hampered by muscular during the second half of the campaign, missing 10 games.

Luis, a Portugal under-20 international, has made just 10 senior appearances for Benfica but is understood to have impressed enough to have attracted a failed bid from Paris Saint-Germain for his services already. Luis' deal at Benfica runs until 2023.

Meanwhile, City are said to be prepared to go to toe-to-toe with Manchester United in the race to sign the Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

The 24-year-old midfielder has scored 28 goals in 48 appearances this season and the Blues are reported by the Mirror to be interested in the 11-times-capped Portugal international's services. PSG are also believed to be circling.
