Man City hopeful of new Ilkay Gundogan deal

Ilkay Gundogan will not be leaving Manchester City this summer and the club are confident over agreeing a new deal.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of next season and earlier talks over an extension had stalled with the two parties failing to come to an agreement.

However, MEN Sport understands the club and the player are still in discussions over a new deal and there’s confidence the German international will agree new terms.

Even if the two parties fail to agree a new deal, Gundogan will not be sold during the summer transfer window.

Pep Guardiola admitted in March he wanted the 28-year-old to stay at the club.

“I said in the press conference we would like to but it depends on the club and him so I don’t know,” the City boss said of Gundogan’s situation. “Hopefully he can stay. I would prefer him to stay but at the same time I want to feel he wants to stay too.

“If he doesn’t want to stay he has to leave. But we would like to continue. Next season he has a contact and a longer time together.”

City paid just over £20million for the midfielder three years ago and should he not agree new terms he would be eligible to leave on a free transfer next summer.
