Man City hit out at Jurgen Klopp comments about Liverpool title rivals' transfer market spending power

Manchester City's chief operating officer has hit back at Jurgen Klopp over comments made about the Premier League champions' spending power.

Despite picking 198 points across the last two campaigns , Pep Guardiola has still decided to invest significantly once more this summer, striking deals for Rodri and Angelino that totalled close to £70million.

Spain international midfielder Rodri became the club's record signing when he arrived from Atletico Madrid for £62.8million, while Angelino joined in a £5.3m switch from PSV.

Juventus defender Joao Cancelo has also been linked heavily of late, with the Italian champions valuing the Portuguese full-back at over £50m.

In contrast, Liverpool have added just two teenagers to their ranks this summer, with Harvey Elliott following Sepp van den Berg through the door following the Dutch defender's £1.3m switch from PEC Zwolle.

Speaking last month, Klopp admitted the European champions were unable to match City stride for stride in the transfer market, saying: "You cannot do it constantly.

"It looks like there are four clubs in the world who can do it constantly. Madrid, Barcelona, City and PSG. Whatever they need, they do. You cannot compare that. That is the situation."

However, Omar Berrada has claimed City find Klopp's comments odd after dismissing the Liverpool's manager words as "incorrect".

"I don’t know why they would make these comments. I don’t know why they would look at other clubs," Berrada is quoted as saying.

"It’s not frustration or anger, we just find it curious that they’d be highlighting our spending.

"We’re fine with their spending. The reality is that all the top clubs invest as they see fit.

"Saying us, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona always invest £200million is not correct."

Liverpool go head-to-head with City when they meet in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
