Man City hit by fireworks outside hotel before Borussia Dortmund Champions League tie

Manchester City were given an unexpected welcome to Dortmund when fireworks were let off outside their team hotel overnight ahead of their Champions League quarter-final.

Pep Guardiola and his squad flew into Germany on Tuesday afternoon having trained in Manchester and conducted their media commitments ahead of the game.

As the Blues look to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time under their manager, some members of the travelling party were woken up during the night by pyrotechnics close to the hotel they were staying in.

A first blast that lasted for about a minute in the early hours of the morning was repeated some time after.

While the display was enough to wake some, others slept right through and it is not understood to have affected the preparations of the players at all as they gear up for their biggest game of the season so far.

City go into the game having won 27 of the last 29 in all competitions but lost at the weekend with a heavily rotated team and needed an injury-time winner from Phil Foden against Dortmund in the first leg to carry a 2-1 advantage into Wednesday's game.

Guardiola has overseen painful quarter-final defeats in each of the last three years to Liverpool, Tottenham, and Lyon respectively and the Champions League remains the coveted trophy missing from the Etihad trophy cabinet.

City will hope they can go out with a bang at Signal Iduna Park tonight and produce enough fireworks on the pitch to move one step closer to European glory.
