Man City great Sergio Aguero names five players that inspired him

Sergio Aguero has named five players that inspired him when he was growing up learning the game.

The Argentine will go down as one of the greatest strikers of all time. He continues to strengthen his position as Manchester City's greatest ever goalscorer after breaking their club record in 2017, and this season hit two more Premier League milestones when he overtook Alan Shearer for most hat-tricks and Thierry Henry for most goals scored by an overseas player.

Most of the striker's influences, unsurprisingly, are South American and include a player that he would later link up with successfully at City during the 2011/12 title-winning season in Carlos Tevez.

However, Aguero also revealed that Michael Owen was on his radar when he was growing up. Owen became the youngest player to hit 100 Premier League goals in an explosive start to his career at Liverpool and would finish as one of the top scorers in the league and for England. As well as the team honours he won, he is also the last Englishman to win the Ballon D'Or.

"When I was very very young I used to focus a lot on [Javier] Saviola that used to play for River Plate," Aguero told City sponsors Etisalat.

"Later I focused on Tevez, [Juan Roman] Riquelme, then Ronaldo from Brazil. I also liked Michael Owen.

"Mainly, I used to focus on the players that I liked and tried to play like they did. When I was young, obviously."
