Man City great names the surprise Chelsea star who must be stopped ahead of fixture

Former Manchester City striker Shaun Goater has named the one Chelsea player that Pep Guardiola's side need to stop in this weekend's Premier League clash.

City return from the international break one point behind the Blues following defeat to Liverpool last time out and another loss would mean Jurgen Klopp's side see their advantage extended further.

Chelsea will provide a stern test for Guardiola's side though, with Frank Lampard excelling since his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Derby County in the summer.

During the club's thrilling start, England international Tammy Abraham has been one standout name but Goater has identified another player who will play a key role.

"The obvious is Tammy Abraham. He has been in really good form. He just brings that energy to his game as well. He is a key player to stop," he told MEN Sport.

"I think Jorginho has been brilliant. He is huge in the transition and how they play. When they transition the play from back to front he is critical during those moments. Man City must stop him because he provides the supply for Abraham and the wingers.

"He provides that directly but also indirectly as well. The pass he gives into the eight and ten then goes into the wide players and Tammy. It's crazy because it looked like Chelsea fans didn't like him a year ago. He looks really good in that role and position."

With the defeat to Liverpool at Anfield two weeks ago handing Jurgen Klopp's side a huge advantage in the race, Goater also spoke about the importance of securing a victory this weekend.

"This game against Chelsea becomes much more important and that's because to come back from a distance of 12 points would be huge. The reason I say it would be huge is because of the current form that Liverpool are in.

"It's vitally important for City to claw back these points slowly but surely. It makes this game absolutely huge and a must win. Great teams do not go back to back losing games. For that reason there is a huge part of me that feels City will go on and win this game.

"There is also equally a part of me from a footballing point of view that is liking what Frank Lampard is doing at Chelsea. They are both teams who like to play in the right way. It's huge game and I reckon City can go onto win this match. 12 points would be a huge mountain to climb."
