Man City goalkeeper Zack Steffen set to join Middlesbrough

Zack Steffen is to join Middlesbrough on a season-long loan with Manchester City set to sign free agent goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to replace him.

Steffen has been City's No. 2 goalkeeper for the last two seasons, but he will leave the Etihad this term in search of more regular first-team football in a World Cup year.

The 27-year-old is usually the USA's first-choice goalkeeper and he will expect to be starting for them during the World Cup in November and December, although he could face competition from Matt Turner, who has signed for Arsenal this week.

The United States are in a group with England, Wales and Iran in Qatar and Steffen will look to play regularly for Middlesbrough as part of his preparations for the tournament.

Steffen has played 21 games for City across the previous two seasons but only once in each campaign in the Premier League, against Chelsea in 2020/21 and against Burnley last season.

Middlesbrough had been looking to sign a goalkeeper this summer and they have beaten competition from other Championship sides to land Steffen.

With the American keen to go and play regularly this season, City are set to bring in Ortega once his contract expires on Thursday.

The 29-year-old has been at Arminia Bielefeld since 2017 and was their first-choice goalkeeper in the Bundesliga last season.
