Man City get update on venue decision for Premier League fixture vs Liverpool FC

Manchester City Council have suggested an update later this this week on whether Manchester City's home game with Liverpool will take place at the Etihad Stadium.

The fixture was one of a number where a neutral venue was considered, with concerns that fans could congregate outside the stadium as Liverpool close in on the Premier League title. If both teams win their next game, Jurgen Klopp's side can clinch their crown against the current holders next week.

The Merseyside derby was allowed to go ahead at Goodison Park and passed without incident, and the next meeting of the Safety Advisory Group will be on Thursday to determine whether City versus Liverpool will have to be played at a neutral ground or not. By that point, Liverpool will have played Crystal Palace but City will not have faced Chelsea so it may not be clear to know whether Liverpool will be crowned champions before the game.

"The decision on the match between Manchester City and Liverpool going ahead at the Etihad Stadium on July 2 is under continued review," a statement from the council read.

"The next meeting of the Safety Advisory Group is on Thursday (June 25) after which we may be able to provide an update."

Anthony Taylor, who took charge of City's 3-0 win over Arsenal last week, has been confirmed as the match official for the game. Taylor also took charge of the fixture between City and Liverpool last season, where Guardiola's side claimed a 2-1 victory that would ultimately help them beat their rivals to the title.
