Man City get positive Aymeric Laporte injury update after Spain concern

Spain manager Luis Enrique says he doesn't expect Aymeric Laporte to undergo any tests in light of his concerning substitution on Sunday night.

The Manchester City defender, who only switched allegiances to Spain this year, has been a key player for his new national side during Euro 2020 and this current international break. He has also started the new season for City as first choice alongside Ruben Dias.

However, there were concerns in Spain and back in Manchester on Sunday when the centre-back was replaced at half time with a suspected adductor injury. Spain's Jose Gaya also went off injured in the 4-0 win over Georgia.

However, Enrique confirmed after the game that 'muscle fatigue' was the reason for Laporte's switch, and that he wasn't expecting much further examination of the City man.

"Most of the changes were due to some discomfort for the players. I hope there are no serious injuries. That's the bad news," he said.

"Laporte has nothing, it's just a small overload. I don't think they'll even test him.

"Gaya does not look good."

Spain face Kosovo on Wednesday in their final clash of the international break, looking to keep top spot in their group — for now — against a Sweden side a point behind but with two games in hand.

In other injury news, the US Men's National Team confirmed that City goalkeeper Zack Steffen has tested positive for Covid-19 and was ruled out of their 1-1 draw with Canada last night. He will also miss their final game of the break, and presumably return late to City.
