Man City get Manchester United Carabao Cup injury boost

Manchester City could have close to a full squad to face Manchester United in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final next week.

Only Leroy Sane is certain to miss the Etihad Stadium clash, with the Blues 3-1 up from the first leg, although the Germany international is due back in full training this week.

Aymeric Laporte managed 75 minutes on his return from four months out with knee ligament damage, as City beat Sheffield United with a late Sergio Aguero goal.

But they were without John Stones, David Silva and Benjamin Mendy, who all picked up injuries in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The reason for Silva’s absence is unclear, but not thought to be serious, but both Mendy and Stones have a good chance of returning to the squad for the derby.

Mendy felt the effects of an all-action display down the left against Palace, and also suffered a painful blow, while Stones limped away at the end of the game.

Guardiola drafted in Nicolas Otamendi into a back three as a replacement for Stones, while Aleks Zinchenko stepped in to play as a left wing back in Mendy’s absence.

Guardiola said the injuries to the pair were not serious: “Mendy had a big kick and has a little bit muscular problems but will be few, few, few, few days so maybe not against Fulham but maybe United he will be ready.

“John had a little problem and that's why I decided for other guys today but it’s not dangerous.”
