Man City get injury boost as Kyle Walker trains ahead of Real Madrid fixture

Kyle Walker trained with Manchester City on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League game with Real Madrid but John Stones did not.

Walker has not featured for the Blues since suffering an ankle injury in the second leg of the Atletico game three weeks ago, and while he has trained with the team since Pep Guardiola has not been able to confirm whether he will be fit to play again this season. Stones was taken off after feeling discomfort in the win over Brighton, and while he returned to the starting lineup to face Real Madrid he did not last a half and did not travel with the squad to Leeds on Saturday.

Walker’s involvement is a boost ahead of the trip to the Bernabeu - where City are hoping to defend a 4-3 lead to book their place in a second successive Champions League final - although he may still be short of sharpness. Guardiola will address their fitness - and that of fellow defender Nathan Ake, who came off with a problem at Elland Road but trained - in his lunchtime press conference on Tuesday.

City have welcomed back Ruben Dias from a hamstring injury in recent weeks and Joao Cancelo will return from suspension for this match to bolster the defence. Further forward, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva were rested in midweek as the City manager attempts to become just the fifth manager in the history of the competition - Real boss Carlo Ancelotti being one of the four to have already done it - to make four Champions League finals.

Academy players including Romeo Lavia, James McAtee and CJ Egan-Riley trained on Tuesday after a successful weekend that saw both the Under-18s and Under-23s celebrate winning their leagues. A number of youngsters will be hoping to make the 23-man matchday squad at the Bernabeu to add to what has already been an excellent campaign for them.

Full training squad : Ederson, Steffen, Carson, Cancelo, Egan-Riley, Laporte, Dias, Ake, Zinchenko, Walker, Fernandinho, Rodri, Lavia, Gundogan, McAtee, Bernardo, De Bruyne, Foden, Palmer, Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling, Grealish
