Man City fringe player sends Pep Guardiola message on future

Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez says he wants to stay at the club despite a slow start to his career at the Etihad Stadium.

Gomez made 23 appearances for City in all competitions last season but struggled to dethrone Joao Cancelo or Nathan Ake at left back with Manuel Akanji and Rico Lewis seemingly ahead of him in the queue.

His drop down the pecking order has led to suggestions the Spain U21 international could leave on loan next season in search of regular playing time. But, in an interview with Spanish paper AS, Gomez is adamant he wants to stay.

"I haven’t talked to him (Pep Guardiola) about next season, but I want to stay there [at City]," he said. "I’m going to go from the first day of the pre-season with a lot of desire to show him that I can have more minutes. The idea is to stay there. It is my wish."

Chance at City may come slightly more readily next season should Kyle Walker leave the club but Gomez faces a battle to find regular minutes.

Despite his lack of games, Gomez has been a huge admirer of Guardiola's approach. In December, he told City's official website: "Having Pep as your manager makes things so much easier because he gives a big range of solutions.

"He explains why you need be in every specific position in every concrete moment. In the end, there are different movements for the team to work out. He’s a great manager, the best manager in the world, and he helps us all to improve as players."
