Man City forward Raheem Sterling dropped for England after Liverpool FC clash

Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling will not play for England on Thursday after a 'disturbance' in a private team area at St George's Park on Thursday.

Pep Guardiola's side lost to Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield in a top of the table clash on Sunday and Sterling was involved in a heated exchange with England team-mate Joe Gomez during the encounter.

According to the Press Association, the pair were again involved in an exchange after meeting up for international duty on Monday.

Now, less than two days after the fixture at Anfield, Sterling has been dropped by Gareth Southgate for Thursday's clash against Montenegro with the FA reporting a disturbance in a private team area as the reason why.

A FA statement read: "The FA can confirm Raheem Sterling will not be considered for Thursday's EURO 2020 qualifier against Montenegro as a result of a disturbance in a private team area at St. George's Park today. He will remain with the squad."

England manager Southgate explained: “We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday.

“One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we’ve been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw.

“My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken. Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it’s important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night.”

Sterling has been in terrific form for club and country this season, scoring 14 goals in 16 appearances for City and eight in eight for England.
