Man City financial results put Premier League title battle with Liverpool into context

The latest financial figures released by Manchester City help put the Premier League title race with Liverpool into more context.

City have announced record revenues of £535.2 million and are close to competing with rivals Manchester United as the richest club in English football.

The latest figures include a profit of £10.1m, while United are forecasted to announce revenues of £560-580m on Monday, according to reports.

City's annual report also claims that the club are now the fifth-most valuable football brand in Europe at £1.3bn, with United and Real Madrid rated at £1.5bn and £1.6bn respectively.

"This level of sustained success is possible for many reasons, but in particular because of our people and, critically, because of our ability to plan," City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said.

"As intended by His Highness Sheikh Mansour, our organisation is now at a level of maturity that enables us to plan on multi-year cycles both in terms of our management of squads and more widely across the business.

"This strategic planning has allowed us to create an environment in which continued on-pitch success is both possible and likely, and financial sustainability is a reality."

Liverpool lead the Premier League by eight points this season and are nine points clear of City.

By comparison Liverpool, who won the Champions League at the end of last season and finished the 2018/19 campaign in second, could see revenues closing in on £500million for 2018/19, which if achieved would see the Reds join an exclusive club currently occupied by only United and City.

On City's financial release, CEO Ferran Soriano added: "Our success is measured by playing beautiful football and by fighting for titles every April and May at the season’s end. In the last decade, we have become the most successful English team – in terms of titles, goals, points and Champions League qualifications – and our aim is to continue to be among the most consistently successful clubs in the world.

"The strategy includes a carefully thought out recruiting effort to attract the best players and coaches who want to play our style of football.

"We recruit the players we believe that we need, and we do it at fair values. As a result, we have a young, motivated, talented squad that has every chance of being successful in the seasons to come."
