Man City fans slate former referee Dermot Gallagher over Liverpool FC free kick analysis

Manchester City fans have criticised Dermot Gallagher over the former referee's insistence that Liverpool were deserving of the free-kick from which they scored their late winning goal against Newcastle on Saturday night.

Fabinho went to ground on the right wing under the attention of Matt Ritchie and from the resulting free-kick, Divock Origi headed Xherdan Shaqiri's cross into the net.

Replays showed the contact on Fabinho from Ritchie was minimal but Gallagher, speaking on Sky Sports on Monday morning, remained adamant the correct decision was made.

"He's grabbed hold of him the first time," Gallagher said. "If the free kick hadn't gone in the net we wouldn't have been looking at it."

Former City manager Stuart Pearce disagreed, saying: "These sort of incidents happen time and time again. To be quite honest, it frustrates me a little bit. I think the players should be a little bit more genuine."

Unsurprisingly, City fans sided with Pearce.

He doesn't even sound like he believes it himself.
