Man City fans send message over next captain amid Vincent Kompany departure

Manchester City supporters believe Kevin de Bruyne should be the club's next captain after Vincent Kompany announced he will leave the club at the end of his contract.

Kompany has won 10 trophies over 11 seasons at the club and leaves to become former club RSC Anderlecht's player-manager on a three-year contract.

City confirmed an unprecedented treble of domestic trophies with a 6-0 victory in the FA Cup final against Watford on Saturday, with Kompany lifting the trophy as his final act for the club.

The 33-year-old said his return to Belgium was 'the most passionate yet rational decision I’ve ever made' amid City's desire to retain the centre-back's services for a further year.

It leaves Pep Guardiola with a hole in his centre-back options after losing the natural leader in his record-breaking squad.

And, in an MEN Sport poll of 2,185 City supporters, 48% believed De Bruyne, the 27-year-old midfielder, should be handed the armband on a full-time basis next season.

35% of voters felt David Silva should become the captain, with the Spanish midfielder entering the final year of his City contract.

11% said Bernardo Silva should become City's official leader, with 6% of the view that Raheem Sterling is the man for the job.

"Vincent helped this club achieve so much before I came and when I arrived here, we tried to do it together along with all the other people to try and maintain that position and create new history," Guardiola said of Kompany's decision to leave the club.

"His spirit has been incredible; he was so important for us in the final weeks of this season and against Leicester he shot with a real desire to score that goal.

Kevin De Bruyne sets Man City challenge after Vincent Kompany departure

Vincent Kompany reveals the impact Man City boss Pep Guardiola has had on his career

"It will be so difficult to replace Vinnie. Everyone is everyone and have their strengths, but Vincent is special. For all the times he gave a speech to the guys or spoke with passion about something, he believed in, his leaving will be a big loss.

"We will miss him. I will miss him a lot. Of course, I wish him the very best in the next stage of his life, but he is an incredible part of this football club and will remain so forever."
