Man City fans send Lionel Messi message after Barcelona defeat as Joan Laporta makes transfer admission

The response to Barcelona's latest Champions League hiding has drawn a predictable response from Manchester City fans.

Last season's 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich came before Lionel Messi announced his desire to leave the Nou Camp. City were strongly linked, but Messi stayed put to avoid a lengthy legal battle over a contract dispute.

Now, with City since declaring they have the finances to fund a move for Messi if he decides to leave this summer, fans believe Barcelona's 4-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain could help their chances of signing the best player in the world.

Messi put Barca ahead from the penalty spot, but an inspired Kylian Mbappe led the PSG response, as he scored a hat-trick to record a famous away win at the Nou Camp. If Barcelona are to progress in the Champions League, they must score four times at the Parc Des Princes in the second leg.

With Barcelona's victors PSG also strongly linked with Messi's signing, this felt like a result that could determine whether Messi does decide to end his association with the Catalan side.

So the response from City fans was understandably a simple message: come to City.

This is how some fans reacted:

Speaking after the game, Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta offered an update on Messi's future in light of the damaging result, ahead of next month's elections.

He said: “Messi wants to win with Barcelona. I’ll do my best to keep him, there are some clubs really interested in signing him. But Leo wants to win titles, not just to earn money. He’s not a ‘problem’ for Barca, Messi is 30 per cent of the club's profit.”
