Man City fans send formation message to Pep Guardiola ahead of Manchester United fixture

Manchester City fans want to see Pep Guardiola persist with a back three for next week's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester United.

City completed their hectic Christmas fixture list with a professional 2-1 win at home to Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side, and are next in action against League Two outfit Port Vale in the FA Cup, where Guardiola will surely rotate his squad.

Against Everton, Guardiola operated with a back three in a change from his usual 4-1-2-2-1 formation. Eric Garcia impressed on New Year's Day alongside Fernandinho and Rodri, who both dropped back into defence. John Stones is fit again, too.

Garcia and EDS partner Taylor Harwood-Bellis would be expected to line up against Port Vale as Fernandinho gets a rest, but Guardiola must then decide whether to play three at the back against United.

When MEN Sport asked fans what defensive formation City should use vs United, supporters overwhelmingly backed the back three to continue.

Of 832 respondents on Twitter, 83.5 per cent wanted the back three to remain, with just 16.5 preferring a return to a standard back four.

The back three allowed Joao Cancelo and Benjamin Mendy to provide the width in a system that saw Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez more central behind striker Gabriel Jesus.
