Manchester City's John Stones made his first Champions League appearance of the season on Wednesday and it'd be fair to say it didn't start well.
After City went in front thanks to a goal from Phil Foden, a routine night appeared to be on the cards for the Premier League side against a Club Brugge outfit they beat 5-1 away from home in the previous meeting.
However, the Belgian outfit were able to restore parity thanks to some lacklustre defending from City.
After a brilliant save from Ederson, Bernardo Silva tried to thrash the ball clear but his hurried effort clattered into Stones ' face and over the goal line.
While there were groans at the Etihad Stadium as the strange sequence reached an unfortunate conclusion, with only 17 minutes on the clock and the overwhelming majority of possession in the game, some City fans online were able to see the funny side.
Stones could do little about the goal, albeit he will take the unwanted credit for it.
The England international has struggled for minutes this season after picking up an injury over the summer while on duty with the Three Lions.
Last season he excelled in partnership with Ruben Dias and rejuvenated a City career many thought was petering out.
Finding a way back into the team ahead of Dias or Aymeric Laporte will be challenge, although moments like the own goal against Brugge are unlikely to count against the former Everton man.
