Man City fans react to UEFA decision that could gift their Champions League spot to Manchester United

Man City fans aren't happy with the scenario that would see Manchester United qualifying for next season's Champions League campaign at their expense.

UEFA released a statement on Thursday and clarified that if a league has to terminate before the completion of all of its fixtures due to the coronavirus crisis, then the football association for that nation would have to select its representatives for European competitions in the 2020/21 season based on 'sporting merit' in the 2019/20 domestic campaign.

Therefore, one option to decide which teams qualify for next season's Champions League and Europa League tournaments would be to complete the season on a points-per-game basis.

This means working out each club's average points-per-game total accrued so far, then extrapolating it over their remaining games.

If this scenario was to be used in the Premier League, the final top four would be Liverpool, City, Leicester City and Chelsea, with United finishing in fifth place.

However, due to City's two-year ban from all European competition after being found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, pending a CAS appeal, United would take their place.

City supporters haven't been the biggest fans of UEFA in the past and they're not happy about this decision either.

"Absolute rubbish!!!" was one fan's response on Facebook, while others echoed that statement by saying: "Bloody farce" and "what a joke."

One fan bemoaned the unfairness of the points-per-game solution: "That's not fair, the bottom teams could win all of their last few games, who knows what could happen."

"You can't celebrate being in Champions League through the back door, in the expense of another team and it means you don't even qualify to be there," one fan said to United. Another was more cutting, saying: "It's the only way they can get in, bless."

Some fans, however, were looking on the bright side and hoping that City might still qualify and keep United out.

One said: "Well if the appeal isn't heard before next season starts then City will be in it," while another added: "Need to have this Champions league appeal sorted out soon."
