Man City fans make Ajax transfer demand to Pep Guardiola

Manchester City supporters believe Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt would make for a perfect summer recruit for Pep Guardiola amid uncertainty over Vincent Kompany's future at the club.

The Blues' captain's current contract expires at the end of the campaign and Guardiola said after Kompany's sensational winner against Leicester on Monday night that he would sit down 'for a beer' to discuss his plans with the centre-back, who turned 33 last month.

Kompany was adamant that he has no intention of retiring at the end of the season but sections of City's support believe De Ligt could be the Belgium international's long-term successor at the club.

The 19-year-old, who has proven himself among the world's best defenders this term with commanding displays against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Juventus this season, is set to leave the Eredivisie outift this summer.

And Ajax's chief executive, Edwin van der Sar, gave reason for optimism among English clubs ahead of Tottenham's last-gasp victory against the Dutch side in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday night.

"I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax," he said. "But I hope he goes out on a high. He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club.

“I think he’ll go to England or Spain."

And City fans on Twitter feel De Ligt fits the bill.
