Man City fans identify new transfer priority after Vincent Kompany news

Manchester City fans want the club to sign defensive reinforcements to replace outgoing captain Vincent Kompany this summer.

Kompany announced his departure from City after 11 years at the weekend, bowing out after leading the club to a historic domestic treble.

Reports have also suggested fellow centre-back Nicolas Otamendi is close to an exit, which would leave John Stones and Aymeric Laporte as the only first choice central defenders.

Youngsters Philippe Sandler and Eric Garcia have featured at times during the season, while forgotten man Eliaquim Mangala was handed a one year contract extension despite not playing for City since New Year's Eve 2017.

When MEN Sport asked fans what position needed strengthening the most this summer, over half chose defence as the priority area, with 52 per cent of the vote.

Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt and Leicester's England defender Harry Maguire have been reported to be potential signings.

37 per cent chose the midfield, with a defensive midfielder remaining a key acquisition to replace 34-year-old Fernandinho.

That had been the long term priority for City, with the likes of Atletico Madrid's Rodri and Lyon man Tanguy Ndombele linked as possible signings.

But Kompany's sudden news of his departure has changed the requirements for City this summer, with a new centre-back now apparently the most pressing concern.

11 per cent of fans said City needed to sign a striker, which could possibly relate to reports linking Gabriel Jesus with a transfer away.

However, less than 1 per cent of votes identified the wide areas as the most important area to reinforce, despite reports suggesting Leroy Sane could leave and Joao Felix is being lined up to arrive.
