Man City fans have Pep Guardiola theory as club withdraws from European Super League

Manchester City fans think Pep Guardiola's comments criticising the European Super League played a big part in the club's decision to withdraw from the controversial breakaway plan.

After two days of intense criticism, City have pulled the plug on their involvement in the Super League.

Chelsea are also understood to have walked away from the plans, while Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has resigned from his role.

Earlier in the day, Pep Guardiola had criticised the plans and called for the decision-makers at the club to explain why the wanted to join the other 11 founder-clubs.

"It is not sport when the relation between effort and success, between effort and reward, doesn't exist," said Guardiola.

"It is not a sport if success is guaranteed or if it doesn’t matter when you lose. I have said many times I want the best competition, as strong as possible, especially the Premier League, and not just one team fight, fight, fight and arrives at the top but cannot be qualified, because it is just for a few clubs.

"These teams have been selected, I don’t know the reason why is going to play this competition in the future.

"The right people have to clarify, they have the obligation and duty as soon as possible to come out all around the world and clarify what the situation is and why they took their decisions."

Guardiola did say he trusts the club, but called for the club to comment while the information he had been given was limited. Now, with the news that City will no longer participate in the Super League, fans believe Guardiola's stance played a part in the club withdrawing.

Despite the news, fans were keen for City to issue an explanation for their decision to join the Super League in the first place, as Guardiola had called for.
