Man City fans choose main rival between Liverpool FC and Manchester United

Manchester City's rivalry with Liverpool has grown so much over the last 12 months that it's surpassed their one with Manchester United.

City and Liverpool went head-to-head last season for the Premier League title, with just one point separating the sides at the end of the campaign.

But while City won the trophy that Liverpool crave so dearly, it was Jurgen Klopp's men who became Champions of Europe - the accolade City are desperate to have for themselves.

Unsurprisingly, the rivalry has already continued into this season, with the two sides playing each other for the first time in eight months in last weekend's Community Shield.

When City and Liverpool’s club anthems were sung before the Wembley showpiece, they were met by a chorus of boos from opposing fans. It was one of two examples that day - the other taking place on the Underground - of what has become a growing rivalry between the two sets of fans.

The Manchester-Liverpool rivalry is one traditionally associated with United rather than City, but the blue half of Manchester is now getting in on the act.

A survey run by the Manchester Evening News found that 80 per cent of City fans consider Liverpool to be one of their top five rivals.

That makes the Merseyside club City fans’ most disliked club, and marks a significant increase from just 12 months ago.

When the same survey was run last year, Liverpool only ranked third with 53 per cent of City fans saying they disliked them. Chelsea (69 per cent) and Manchester United (68 per cent) topped the poll that year.

Manchester United are City’s second biggest rivals according to this year’s survey after being picked by 78 per cent of City fans. It’s a big jump down to third place with Tottenham on 28 per cent, followed by Chelsea on 25 per cent and Arsenal on 13 per cent.

It seems City's view of United is replicated by their rivals across Manchester, too, as only two thirds of Manchester United fans who completed the survey said that City were one of their top five rivals. Liverpool remain United’s most disliked club with 88% of fans selecting them.

Chelsea are their third most disliked side at 43%, followed by Leeds at 38% and Arsenal at 31%.
