Man City fans have called for the club to sign Lionel Messi after Barcelona confirmed they won't sign their legendary superstar to a new contract.
A Barcelona statement said both parties were willing to sign a new deal but were unable to do so because of LaLiga regulations.
The Premier League champions were interested in Messi after the 34-year-old announced his intentions to leave the Catalan club last year.
Messi made a u-turn on that decision but now that he is a free agent, it opens the door for City and any other potential interested parties to make a pursuit of the world-class forward.
The news emerged on a hectic night for City fans, with Jack Grealish signing for the club for a British record £100m fee from Aston Villa.
Before that deal was confirmed though, they were reacting to the shocking developments from Barcelona and hoping City will make a move for Messi.
One City fan joked: "Now Man City fans are going to have to try and fit Kane, Messi, Grealish, de Bruyne, Foden and Mahrez into their starting XI predictions next season."
Another City fan commented "bring Messi home" while another Twitter user said that City would challenge PSG for the move by stating: "We are 100% not gonna let PSG have a free run at Lionel Messi The board have been obsessed with this transfer for years it’s now a huge possibility."
One topic that was brought up was former City star Sergio Aguero, who had hoped to play alongside his international teammate at Barcelona after leaving the Etihad.
Mahir commented: "Please @ManCity bring back Aguero and bring Messi along with him, it's only right."
Another Twitter user commented: "Come on @ManCity let's go after the god of football Messi. Announce Messi."
There were also lots of memes among football fans joking City will drop their interest in Kane to go for Messi.
One City fan posted a picture of Toy Story character Woody getting dropped with the caption: "City fans to Kane after seeing that Messi isn’t renewing his contract."
