Man City fans back Fernandinho position change amid contract reports

Manchester City fans would be happy to see Fernandinho offered a new contract, even if it meant the club do not sign a new central defender.

Reports have suggested City will offer the 34-year-old a new deal, even though they have just broken the club transfer record to sign his long-term replacement in Rodri.

It is claimed that Fernandinho's ability to play in defence if needed has prompted City to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the 2019/20 season.

That would mean City do not need to sign a new centre-back to replace Vincent Kompany, with Fernandinho supporting John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi.

Harry Maguire and Nathan Ake have been linked with a move to City, but fans have reacted positively to the reports surrounding Fernandinho, and think keeping him is more important than bringing in a new central defender.

When MEN Sport asked fans on Twitter whether Fernandinho should be used as Pep Guardiola's fourth-choice centre-back when he isn't playing in midfield, 60% of the 1566 voters backed the idea.

However, 40% said City should press on and sign a new defender anyway.

In the comments, fans thought Fernandinho has the quality to deputise at the back, and has already shown it at times last season.

But others had their reservations.
