Man City fan ordered to take down anti VAR banner during Everton FC clash

A Manchester City fan was ordered to take down an anti-VAR banner that was displayed during the first half of their Premier League meeting with Everton.

Two incidents in the first half brought about delays due to VAR reviews, with City midfielder Phil Foden seeing an effort ruled out as Riyad Mahrez was offside in the build-up.

Mahrez was then involved in another VAR incident, as a possible penalty was looked at by officials - although they later issued a verdict that he was again offside.

After both incidents, fans around the stadium made their thoughts on the Premier League's technology clear and one supporter went a step further.

He held up a sign saying 'RIP Football VAR is here Fans Boycott?' but pictures showed that stewards then ordered the supporter to remove the banner.

VAR has been highly controversial in the Premier League this season, with the most recent weekend of action overshadowed by numerous marginal offside calls leading to goals being disallowed.

This has led the IFAB to declare that VAR is not being used correctly by England's top-tier, although no changes will  be made by the Premier League this season.
