Man City extend impressive Manchester United record with Premier League win over Cardiff

Three points for Manchester City on Wednesday moved them back above Liverpool in the Premier League title race with just six games remaining - but it also secured another important record.

The win over Cardiff lifted City to a hugely impressive 80 points from 32 games, with a maximum total of 98 points still possible.

Fixtures against Tottenham and Manchester United in the Premier League are the toughest of the remaining games Pep Guardiola's side still have to play, meaning their rivals can have a huge say in the destination of the Premier League trophy.

But even if United put a dent in City's hopes of winning the league, there is no chance of the red half of Manchester lifting the trophy themselves.

That is because City's win against Cardiff took them 19 points clear of United with just 18 points left to play for, meaning City will finish above their neighbours for another season.

The current gap between the sides is the same as last season, when City blew away the rest of the Premier League in record breaking style.

And City have now finished above United in the league for a sixth successive season, and for the seventh time in the eight seasons since the Blues won their first Premier League title in 2012.

In that time, City have won nine of the 15 league meetings between the sides, and drawn twice.

The current streak is the longest such run of consecutive finishes above United since ten seasons between 1928-29 and 1937-38.

However, United hold the longest streak of finishes above City, with the 20 seasons between 1991-92 and 2010-11.

But the balance of power has shifted in Manchester in recent years, and a win over United at Old Trafford on April 24 for City will only confirm that trend, and go a long way to ensuring another Premier League title at the Etihad.
